Direct Contributions

Methods

There are basically three ways to make direct contributions to support independent artists.  (For now, let’s say “artists” includes everyone from indy news to indy music to painters and filmmakers and even game developers.)  The first is through buying their merchandise, which we’ll cover on a different page.  The two we’re doing to discuss here are funding and equipment.

Materials and Equipment

It costs money to do what I do and to stay alive doing it.  The same is true for the musician, the photographer, the actor, the writer, the painter, the sculptor…these things all cost money to do.  One of the ways that patrons of independent artists have supported them traditionally is by providing necessary material goods rather than cash.  There are thousands of sites all over the ‘net that have “wishlist” functionality and other ways to link things you’re interested in acquiring.  Gift cards are another excellent option.  For me personally, Amazon, TigerDirect.Com, and B&H photo are excellent places for gift cards.  Guitar Center is the best locally-located option for audio equipment that has national presence.  (Also Meijer’s or Harding’s grocery stores if you live in the great lakes region.  Food is an expense too!)

There are the additional exigencies of trying to pull myself up out of over a decade of abject poverty. At present I don’t have any “wish-lists” set up, although they’ll come in time.  With short and long-range goals being what they are, there’s a wide variety of things I can use from the inexpensive to the very expensive, from something as basic as a pizza to something as complex as real estate.  Cameras, computing equipment, transportation, software, hardware upgrades and other computer equipment, lenses for the cameras, tripods, lights, sound, a place to set all this stuff up as a studio, musical instruments, a way to get around…you name it, I need it.  Your favorite musician might appreciate a set of guitar strings…or a guitar, if you’ve got that kind of weight to throw at it.  Painters need paint, sculptors need clay, and so forth.

Funding Contributions

Obviously, cash contributions are helpful themselves.  Landlords, utility companies, service personnel, and the local grocery store don’t accept material goods in trade for they cash they want.  Often, independent artists have trouble meeting these needs.  Over the evolution of the ‘net, services like PayPal, Google Wallet, and BitCoin have proven vital means of helping struggling artists support themselves.

In my case, I’ve always used PayPal.

In response to feedback from readers over the years, I’ve done all I could to provide the widest possible range of options for cash contributions.  The most frequently-used is the single payment, but there is a variety of recurring options as well.  I have used PayPal for a number of years with very few issues; you do not have to have a PayPal account to make a contribution with your credit or debit card.

Single Payment

Click To Make A One-Time ContributionEvery bit as simple as it sounds,  Click the graphic to make a one-time contribution in any amount you choose using your major credit card or PayPal.  This is the most frequently used option, and is best for those times when I’m tight on rent or food, or need to pay another bill (e.g. software subscriptions, web hosting, domain renewal) on which my continued operation relies.  If you’d rather send through PayPal.Com directly, the address is john@lowgenius.com

Recurring Payments

Due to restrictions of PayPal’s billing system, it is not possible to set up recurring payments at a user-defined price.  Contributions can be made weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly, in varying amounts, by clicking on the appropriate link below each graphic.

These links create recurring payments on an annual, monthly, or weekly basis.  To make a single contribution click HERE or on the “Make A Single Contribution Here” graphic ABOVE.  You will be billed once every YEAR, MONTH, or WEEK in the amount you select from the tables below.
